Memorial Day has become a much rejoiced three day weekend with traditions like BBQs and camping trips. We also need to honor the reason behind it ~ remembering heroes that have fought for our freedom. Bravery. Selflessness. Sacrifice. Heroism. Those are some of the words that come to mind as we remember our loved ones, and perfect strangers that helped shape this great country.
A few that are close to our hearts, include:
World War 1 Service Members: The medal below was awarded to the Great Grandfather of a staff member within our organization; the two smaller circular medals are from a Great Uncle that was an early G Man (early FBI).
World War 2 Service Members: The two medals below were awarded to a Grandfather from within our organization. Both of the WW1 and WW2 medals hang prominently, reminding the family of the bravery, service and sacrifice.
Peace Time Service Members: The drawings below were created in the early 1900′s by a brother of an Air Force member. Each week, cartoon drawings were sent. Over time, the Sargent found out about the drawings, and asked for them to be hung for the entire base to see to help with moral. A great reminder for us to continue to support friends and family abroad, no matter what the conditions.
Service Members from Whatcom County: The City of Bellingham created Memorial Park, a beautiful, well kept park that honors lost war heroes on engraved marble. You can see in the picture below there is one slab with major wars called out; each of those wars are expanded onto it’s own slab, where names of lost heroes are engraved. It’s a respected park within our community, especially on days like today.
Our hearts go out to all those remembering lost loved ones today. Thank you to all the active Service Members keeping our country a wonderful place to live.
